Fluoride Calculations(2)

Fluoride Content of Toothpastes:

    -0.221% NaF(45% F) = 0.1%F = 1000 ppm = 1 mg/gm of toothpaste.
    -0.41% SnF2(24% F) = 0.1%F = 1000 ppm =1 mg/gm of toothpaste.
        Sn = 120, F=l9 X 2 = 38, total MW =158-- 38/158= 0.25X 0.4 = 0.1%F
    -0.76% MFP (14% F) = 0.1%F = 1000 ppm =1mg/gm of toothpaste.

Fluoride Content of Gels and Liquids:

    -1.23% F (APF) = 12,300 ppm =12.3 gm/L =12.3mg F/ml.
        Large fluoride tray may hold 5 ml or 61 mg F total.
    -0.05% NaF = 0.023%F = 230 ppm = 230 mg/L= 0.23 mg/ ml.
        Na= 23mw, F= 19 mw total=42 , 19/42= 0.45 X 0.05=0.023

Lethal Dosage:

-Adult = 1.25 gms F or 2.5 gms of NaF is lethal. (8-16 mg/kg of body weight). Best to consider 8 mg of F/kg body weight as lethal adult dose.

e.g. 80Kg adult x 8mg/Kg =640 mg of F.

-For a child 5 mg of F/kg body weight considered toxic.

    e.g. 20 Kg child X 5 mg/Kg body weight= 100 mg of F toxic.
    Small F tray may hold 2 ml each. APF = 12.3 mg F/ml,
    2 trays = 4 ml x 12.3 mg= about 50 mg. This is half the toxic dose.
