Salivary Flow Rate:
-Time patient chewing paraffin for 5 minutes expectorating periodically into a measuring container.
-Measure the saliva sample and calculate flow rate on a ml/minute basis.
-At less than 0.7 ml/min patient is at risk, while 1.0 ml/min or greater is considered normal.
-Accuracy is good. Salivary flow and Buffer capacity tests may be the only salivary indicators which may aid in determining caries risk.
