SUGGESTIONS FOR NOTES, WEEKS 9-11

(Remember that these are merely suggestions: you needn’t write on any of these topics.)

1.  What does it mean to say that morality is objective?  Is it?

2.  What, if anything, is intrinsically good?  What does Kant say is intrinsically good?

3.  What does Kant mean by “the good will”?

4.  What does Kant mean by “duty”?

5.  Do you share Kant’s notion of duty?  (In part?)

6.  Do/can we ultimately formulate maxims for all of our actions?

7.  Do intentions matter when determining an action’s moral worth?  Do outcomes matter?

7.  What is the categorical imperative?

8.  Are there differences between Kant’s various formulations of the categorical imperative?

9.  What are Kant’s reasons for not founding ethics empirically?

10.  What are the things that can be moral or not moral for Kant?

11.  Are there moral differences between different cultures?  (between different sexes?)

12.   Does the (actual, real) variety of moral views on different issues affect Kant’s view?  Does this variety affect the objectivity of morality in general?
