One Four to Six Page Papers (30%)
Midtern Exam (30%)
Final Exam (30%)
Several Quizzes* (10%)Anticipate a challenging course. The reading material is challenging, both in amount and content. The minimum expectation is that you discuss the material in class. Participation could significantly impact your grade. This makes attendance effectively mandatory. In addition you have several small assignments as well as a few large ones. You must complete every major assignment and two thirds of the minor assignments* in order to pass the class. There is zero tolerance for late assignments; short assignments will not be accepted, and longer assignments will be penalized one-third of a grade per day late.
Extensions & Makeup Exams
You can arrange an extension on the major paper in these circumstances: You notify me three days in advance of the due date. You have a reason that justifies your need for an extension. We then make specific arrangements for a deadline that is within a week of the due date; that deadline must be met. Emergencies, of course, require special consideration.
Philosophy is of a somewhat lower priority in the final exam schedule. If you have another class with the same exam time 1 pm 3pm Thursday, July 19, 2001 and it appears before philosophy in the timetable (starts with the letters A O), please inform me immediately. I will make arrangements for a makeup exam in these cases.
Rough Drafts
I am willing to look over rough drafts of major papers on these conditions: I must have twenty four hours to look over your paper before I provide you with comments, and I will not comment on drafts given to me any later than the four days in advance of the due date. I will be available during office hours for discussion of your other assignments.Plagiarism & Cheating
Just dont. Cheating well is hard. It would be easier to just write the papers. The topics will be weird enough that it will be difficult to find ready made answers on the internet or anywhere else. You could pay someone to write it for you, but they probably aren't as smart as you are, plus you're out ten bucks. Plagiarism is a bit more difficult. Let me give you some hints. Here's the problem. Take a look at the list of things that threaten your academic integrity. Here is are the possible punishments for acadmic dishonesty. The good news is that plagiarism is easy to avoid if you are careful (and I know you wouldn't try any of those other things anyway.) Here is a checklist to help you avoid plagiarism. We are all grateful to Professor Edelberg for providing it. (See how easy it is not to plagiarize.
