Phil 102: Introductory Logic Fall 2004 - Assignments
Remember assignments are due at or before the start
of sections - late work will be graded but will not receive credit.
Hint: look at the hints and
solutions section on the book web page – but work out your own answers
first!
Week One: August 23-27
- Assignment: email your TA by Wednesday pm.
- Read Introduction and §1.1—4 for Wednesday — including ‘You
Try It’
- Read ‘Instructions About Homework Exercises’ p5–10 for Friday —
including ‘You Try It’
Week Two: August 30-September 3
- Due Friday September 3rd: Ex 1.2–5, 2.1 (arguments 1-4
only), 2.2 (odd numbered arguments only), 2.8-10, 2.13.
Week Three: September 7-10
- Due Friday September 10th:
Ex 2.17, 2.20, 2.22, 2.24-5, 3.3, 3.6, 3.9 (you'll get credit if you
get
close to maximizing the number of true sentences in the last two
exercises).
Week Four: September 13-17
- Due Friday September 17th: Ex 3.12-14, 3.18
(sentences 1, 7, 9, 11 – don't worry if Grade Grinder says the other
sentences are wrong or missing), 3.19 (sentences 1-3), 3.20,
3.21 (sentences 1-8), 3.22 (using only the sentences
you wrote in 3.21).
Week Five: September 20-24
- Due Friday September 24th: Ex 3.23-24, 4.1.
Week Six: September 27-October 1
- Due Friday October 1st: 4.4, 4.6, 4.9 (sentences 1-4),
4.13, 4.16, 4.17, 4.22, 4.23, 4.26, 4.34-35.
Week Seven: October 4-8
- Due Friday October 8th: 5.1 (see hints and solutions on
LPL web site), 5.3, 5.5, 5.11, 5.15.
Week Eight: October 11-15
- Due Friday October 15th: Ex 6.1, 6.2, 6.4.
Week Nine: October 18-22
- Due Friday October 22nd: Ex 6.2, 6.4, 6.7, 6.9-12, 6.17, 6.18, 6.19,
6.21. (Quite a few proofs for you, but many of them are from the
YTIs, so you should have done them already as part of your reading. As
a little help, have a
look at the hints and solutions on the LPL web page – of course, if you just copy the
answers there you won't learn anything, and you won't be able to do the
quizzes, and anyway.)
Week Ten: October 25-29
- Due Friday October 29th: Ex 7.1, 7.2, 7.6, 7.10, 7.11.
Week Eleven: November 1-5
- Due Friday November 5th: Ex 8.1, 8.2 (sentences 1-3),
8.17-19.
Week Twelve: November 8-12:
- Due Friday November 12th: Ex 8.20-23, 9.3-5, 9.8.
Week Thirteen: November 15-19
- Due Friday November 19th: Ex 9.9, 9.10 – sorry it's late, but it's
good quiz practice!
