Class Text: Understanding Symbolic Logic by Virginia Klenk Grade Distribution:
The course allows for (and demands) a high level of participation. Students should be prepared to work through material assigned and to have all required formulas and definitions memorized. To this end, attendance is mandatory. A grade penalty will be assigned to students who miss more than 2 classes. Additional Points: 1. You are responsible for all material – both in class and in the readings. If you miss a lecture, you need to get the notes for it. 2. In this vein, you must take accurate and extensive notes of class lectures and you should also note any key definitions and formulas in your readings. I fully expect you to have any definitions and formulas learned by the class following the one in which they were introduced. 3. You are responsible for being able to come to class and the midterm exam. I am willing to make some accommodations for emergencies but it is your responsibility to arrange work, home and personal commitments around the class schedule. If you find this impossible, please come see me immediately. 4. As this class meets only once a week, the workload is more concentrated than that of a regular course. Be prepared for this – do not wait until the night before before trying to prepare for class. Be honest with yourself about the commitment this class requires. 5. Like regular math courses, the key to success is to keep with the work, to complete the homework assigned and to ask questions when you are confused. The work in this class is cumulative and each week is more difficult than the last. If you fall behind, this will affect the rest of the term. If you find yourself lost, you must get help and soon. If you wait too long, it may be impossible for you to ever get back on track. 5. There is a great temptation for students to ignore or downplay the importance of the quizzes. Do not make this mistake. Collectively, they account for two full grade points. If you do not take them seriously, it is quite easy to drop an entire letter grade or more on your final score. |
