Home Syllabus/Questions Course Policies Writing Guide

Grade Distribution:

            Comment Sheets: 20%

            Outline of Paper: 15%

            Final Paper: 30%

            Final Exam: 35%

The course allows for (and demands) a high level of participation. Students should be prepared to discuss the readings in detail and to offer reasoned opinions about the material. To this end, attendance is mandatory. A grade penalty will be assigned to students who miss more than 2 classes.

Due Dates:

            June 2, 9, 16, 30, July 14: Comment sheets are due.

June 26: Paper outline is due.

July 7: Final paper is due.

July 21:  Final Exam (note:  final exam is from 8-10 am)

Note: Material should be handed in at the beginning of class. To avoid excessive late penalties, email me any late papers as soon as possible.

Late penalties:

For the paper outline and the final paper, students will be docked a half grade for each class past the due date.

Unless there is a documented medical reason, late comment sheets will not be accepted!

Additional Points:

1. You are responsible for all material – both in class and in the readings. If you miss a lecture, you need to get the notes for it.

2. In this vein, you must take accurate and extensive notes of class lectures and you should also note any key points in your readings. Every week I provide a detailed set of study questions on the readings. Ideally, you should answer all of these.

3. You are responsible for being able to come to class and the final exam. I am willing to make some accommodations for emergencies but it is your responsibility to arrange work, home and personal commitments around the class schedule. If you find this impossible, please come see me immediately.

4. As this class is an accelerated summer class, the workload is double that of a regular course. Be prepared for this – there is a great deal of reading and writing in a relatively short period of time. Be honest with yourself about the commitment this class requires. If you realize that you will not be able to do the work, you should drop this class.

5. There is a great temptation for students to ignore or downplay the importance of the comment sheets. Do not make this mistake. Individually, they account for a half grade point each. If you do not take them seriously, it is quite easy to drop an entire letter grade or more on your final score.

6.  Students who fail to complete the final paper or the outline will not be eligible to pass the course. Students who do not take the final exam will likewise be assigned a failing grade.
