In "White Privilege and Male Privilege", Peggy McIntosh claims that an analogy can be made between white skin privilege and male privilege. In the first part of your paper, you should explain in detail what McIntosh means by this (e.g., what features does she think they share?). In the second part of your paper, you should do the work that McIntosh only hints at—in other words, give some examples of male privilege, and do a McIntosh-style analysis of them. In this paper, I am not looking for your thoughts on whether or not McIntosh is right; I am looking for careful explanation of McIntosh’s position and thoughtful application of her ideas to the new examples that you come up with. Keep in mind that this is not a research paper; you do not need any sources outside of the McIntosh article. If you wish to use another author that we read in this class to make a point, you may do so; just make sure you provide a reference (as you should whenever you use someone else’s ideas).
The paper is due October 8th at the beginning of class. It should be 4-6 pages in length, typed, double spaced, in 12 pt. Times New Roman font, with reasonable margins. Late papers will be excused only for documented medical emergencies. Nonetheless, late papers should be handed in as soon as possible, because they lose a third of a grade a day. Don’t cheat—you should make sure you are familiar with what counts as plagiarism. The minimum penalty for plagiarism is a failing grade for the assignment; I turn all cases over to the university and they may recommend further consequences. I will grant extensions if you have a good reason and you tell me more than two days before the paper is due. If you need any help, or just want to run ideas by me, feel free to come by during my office hours (or make an appointment) or email me. Make sure you take a look at the Writing Guide. I will look at drafts of papers, but not any later than two days before the paper is due. I prefer to meet with students in person to discuss drafts. Rewrites are not allowed.
