Fall 2004
Prof. Mitzi Lee

Class policies:

Course Requirements
3 5-page papers (30% each)
3 Tutorials
Discussion and Quizzes (10%)
• Improvement, or a particularly strong performance on one of the assignments, will be taken into consideration.
• You must complete all three papers in order to pass the course. Failure to complete any one of them means failure in the course.

Attendance Policy:
Class attendance is mandatory, and significant absences from class will be factored into your grade.

Tutorials:
The papers will be due on the Friday of the 4th, 9th, and 14th weeks. The week after, you will meet with me in a one-on-one tutorial in which you will read or summarize and explain your paper, and we will discuss it critically. Most of my comments about the paper will come from this tutorial. I will return the paper to you afterwards with an assigned grade.
You are permitted to continue revise the paper between the due date and the date of the tutorial. If you make any changes, you should bring a fresh copy of the revised paper to the tutorial for me, as well as one for yourself.
Tutorials will be scheduled during the 5th, 10th, and 15th weeks of the semester; during those weeks, classes will be cancelled. If you miss your tutorial, there is no guarantee that it can be rescheduled, and if it cannot be rescheduled, you will receive a penalty deduction of 1 full letter grade, unless you have a documentable medical excuse or family emergency. Do not miss your scheduled tutorial.

Re-writes.
There will be no rewrites, except for papers with a C+ or below.

Policy on Academic Integrity and Dishonesty.
There will be no toleration of academic dishonesty. Any form of academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, copying, or allowing someone else to copy your work, will lead to automatic failure in the course, plus disciplinary action by the Senate Committee. Note: this includes any unacknowledged use of internet sources. I will go through the forms of academic dishonesty relevant to this course when I give you the paper assignment. I enforce university policies––which include measures leading to expulsion––as laid down in the Student Disciplinary Procedure Handbook, published by the Senate Committee on Student Discipline.
You can also find guidelines for crediting sources properly in your papers at: http://tigger.uic.edu/~edelberg/crediting_others/index.htm
If you find that you are having great difficulty in writing a paper, do not resort to plagiarism. Rather, come to me for help.

Special Needs.
If you have any special needs or learning disabilities, please let me know immediately so that we can accommodate you as fully as possible. Students with disabilities who require accommodations for access and participation in this course must be registered with the Office of Disability Services, 312-413-2103 (voice) or 312-413-0123 (TTY).

Class Communications:
I will regularly send emails to the entire group through Banner. These emails will be sent to your official e-mail address. If you use a different email address (e.g., elaine@yahoo.com), then you MUST either make a point of checking your UIC address regularly, or (better) you should use the ACCC utility for forwarding your UIC email to your other email address. To forward your UIC email, go to:
http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/index.html/EMAIL.html
and click on "Email - Change netid@uic.edu email forwarding address". You will be directed to log in, and then to change the address to which your UIC email gets forwarded.
It is your responsibility to make sure you get the notices I send to your UIC email address.
