Course Description:
I. Course Description
This course provides the student with knowledge and experience in basic
physical assessment skills for proper interpretation of patient response to drug therapy.
It prepares the student for independent work in clinical clerkship settings. The student
will utilize previously gained didactic information toward clinical evaluation of
pharmacotherapeutic effectiveness.

III. Goals
A. To develop the knowledge and skills necessary for the student to
obtain subjective and objective data from patients to evaluate
drug therapy.
B. To develop student competency in assessing physical parameters which
may be affected by specific drugs and diseases states.
III. Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
A. List the basic elements of the patient history and physical exam.
B. For each of the anatomic systems presented:
1. List specific information which should be obtained from a patient to
aid in evaluation of each system.
2. List the terms used to describe normal and abnormal physical
findings.
3. Correlate physiological and pathophysiological processes with
specific physical findings.
4. List the equipment necessary to perform an assessment.
5. Demonstrate the techniques used to evaluate each system.
6. Identify specific drugs and diseases which can affect each anatomic
system.
C. Demonstrate proficiency in blood pressure and heart rate measurements.

B. Required PMPR 656 Course Manual:
The course manual consists of 8 modules prepared by the faculty of
the Department of Pharmacy Practice. This independent study manual provides objectives,
and required reading assignments.
V. Evaluation:
Course completion time: 10 weeks
A. Midterm exam (50%)
1. Covers Modules 1 - 4.
2. Scheduled on week #5
B. Final exam (50%)
1. Covers Modules 5 - 8.
2. Schedule on week #10
If a student fails either one of the exams, they will be allowed to
repeat the exam within one week of being informed of such.
