CLASS NOTES: Syllabus, handouts, typed overhead notes, and grades will be posted online. You can either follow the links from the UIC home page for online class material, or go to: www.uic.edu/classes/psych/psych100kaj

E-Mail: E-mail is probably the easiest way for you to reach me. I generally check e-mail more than once a day and will try to respond to your e-mails within 48 hours. If you have not heard from me within that time frame, please resend the e-mail. It is possible that there was a problem with the server and I did not get your first message. However, neither I nor your TAs will accept any assignments sent via e-mail. Paper copies of assignments MUST be submitted. Also, because of a problem with viruses, attachments will not be opened. In some cases people are unaware that they are sending a virus with an attachment and it ends up creating problems on multiple computers. For this reason, I do not open attachments. Please make sure your message is contained within the text of your e-mail.

GRADES: Your grades are based on the total number of points you earn from section Exams, Discussion Section Quizzes, (Q), Writing Assignment (WA), and Psychological Experience Credit (PEC). Your grade will be based out of 600 points.

Exams (400 points): You will have 4 section exams. Each exam will consist of 50 Multiple Choice, True/False type questions and is worth 100 points. The exams will be completed on a scantron. This means that you need to come prepared with a sharpened number 2 pencil.

Make Ups: It is important that everyone is present for the exam. Missing an exam makes things difficult for both me and you. Make ups will ONLY be allowed with PRIOR approval (no less than 24 hours before the exam). If an EMERGENCY occurs the day of an exam, you MUST bring in some form of verifiable documentation by the NEXT class period. ALL make ups must be completed within 1 week of the exam during my office hours or the TA's office hours.

Studying for the Exam, the Study Guide is a good resource to use to study for the exams. I recommend that students take the Matching and Multiple Choice exercises as an exam and then review the sections where mistakes are made.

Discussion Section Quizzes (90 points): You can receive up to 90 points from quizzes over the terms from the chapters. Terms are listed both in the margins as you read the chapter and at the end of the chapter. Each quiz will consist of 10 terms randomly chosen. You will need to match the term to the definition. These quizzes are designed to help you learn the material and keep up with the class. NOTE: Quizzes will ONLY be given during your discussion section. You MUST be present for the entire discussion section to take the quiz. There are NO MAKE-UPs on Quizzes. If you miss a quiz, it will count as one of your dropped quizzes. If you miss more than 3 quizzes, quizzes will count as ZEROs.

Writing Assignment (50 points) : You will receive a separate handout which will include details on what you will need to do to complete this assignments and the point distribution for the assignment in your discussion section. The Writing Assignment is due in your Discussion Section during week 11 (Monday, March 31st through Friday, April 4th) .

You can earn bonus points by submitting portions of your paper early for review (see handout for details). Late papers will be penalized 1 POINT PER DAY INCLUDING WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS that your paper is late. ABSOLUTELY NO PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER YOUR LAST DISCUSSION SECTION (Monday, April 28 through Friday, May 2, 2003).

NOTE: Papers and outside references MUST be given directly to YOUR TA. You will need to sign in when you paper is turned in. Papers left in a mailbox, slid under the office door, given to another TA, instructor, or staff person WILL NOT be considered turned in. Late Points will continue to accumulate.

NOTE ON PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism is the unauthorized use of the language and/or thoughts of another author and representation of them as one's own. If you are going to use the words or thoughts of someone other than yourself, you must acknowledge the source. If even a few words come directly from another source, those words must be quoted.
It is your responsibility to know what plagiarism is, and the consequence for it. Any assignment where information has been copied or a few words simply replaced with synonyms, will result in a ZERO for that assignment. NO EXCEPTIONS. It is your responsibility to make sure that you are putting things into your own words and giving credit to the author for ideas taken from sources.

                        Handout                  Answers

Psychological Experience Credits (60 points): You are expected to earn 8 Psychological Experience Credits (PECs). Like any other course requirement, these credits will be factored into your final course grade. You may earn your 8 PECs by any of three methods: (1) participating as a subject in IRB-approved research studies conducted under the supervision of Psychology Department faculty, (2) writing summaries of published empirical research using the resources of UIC's Daley Library, and/or (3) participating as a simulated client in one or more professional training sessions conducted by, and for the purpose of training, advanced undergraduate and graduate students in psychology. You have the option of earning all 8 PECs by any one of these methods, or you may earn some PECs by each method. The requirement is simply that you earn a total of 8 PECs. A separate document that explains each of these methods in greater detail will be distributed in class and is also available online at: www.uic.edu/classes/psych/psych100/

Each PEC you earn, up to a maximum of 8 will count for 6 points (or 1 percent of your course grade). with an extra 12 points (or 2 percent) awarded if you complete all 8 PECs. Thus if you complete 1 PEC, then 6 points will be added to your points for the course, 2 PECs = 12 points, 3 PECs = 18 points, 4 PECs = 24 points, 5 PECs = 30 points, 6 PECs = 36 points, 7 PECs = 42 points, 8 PECs = 60 points (8x6=48 plus you get the 12 bonus points, so 48+12=60).

Extra Credit: You can also earn up to 20 extra credit points from the exams (5 points x 4 exams) by writing a question that could have been asked on the material covered for that exam and providing the answer. Also, you can earn up to 10 extra credit points by turning in portions of your paper for review early. NO OTHER EXTRA CREDIT WILL BE AVAILABLE.
