General Guidelines for Developmental Activities

You need to do 60 points worth of assignments for this course. Developmental activities are worth 20 points each;
journal article summaries are worth 10 points each. You can do any combination of developmental activities and
article summaries to reach 60 points. You cannot do extra assignments to make up for lost points.

You will only get credit for the developmental activities if you follow the instructions carefully. Below are general guidelines.
Follow ALL of the following that are applicable to your specific assignment.

While you are observing, please note the following:
1. Purpose of your observation
2. Place or location of your observation
3. Date of your observation
4. Subject(s)' age, sex, and any special characteristics you need to note
5. Length of your observation in minutes

Prepare the following:
1. A careful record of your observation with notes describing the incident and setting in enough detail that it can be analyzed
later. Be careful to stick to the facts - what actually was done and said by the subject. Try not to interpret actions or give them emotional labels (e.g., angry, sad, confused).
2. An analysis of your observational project. Follow the instructions for the particular activity that you chose. Make sure to
relate the assignment to what you learned in class or in the book.
3. Please turn in your notes from the observation with each assignment in addition to the specific information requested in the
assignment. Your notes do not need to be typed.
Read each assignment carefully. Provide an insightful discussion of your experiences in a type-written format. Make sure to dedicate at least 1-page of the discussion to writing about how the activity relates to the topics / themes from the class.

Note: The observational activities are designed to help you experience some of the situations about which you will read. Please ask people you know if you can observe their children. You might have younger siblings, cousins, nieces/nephews, or neighbors who could participate in the activities. Because many of these activities require working with children, please do not wait until the last minute to start the assignment.

No late assignments will be accepted, but you can turn them in early.
