Key for Special Reading Worksheet
Ogden & Corkin (2001); Tulving et al. (1988)

1. Using terminology from class, describe HM and KC's main deficits.
HM - anterograde amnesia, retrograde amnesia for 11 years prior to surgery
KC - retrograde amnesia, anterograde amnesia for episodic memory only

2. How did their deficits begin?
HM - bilateral medial temporal lobe resection (note: I accepted other terminology) to
alleviate seizures, performed in 1953 when he was 27 years old
KC - motorcycle accident in 1981 when he was 30 years old; caused damage to
left frontal-parietal and right parietal-occipital regions

3. On which tasks can they perform normally?  What things are they unable to do?
HM and KC show preserved STM, can keep up a normal conversation, etc.
HM shows implicit learning, but is unable to form new explicit memories.
KC has no recall for episodic information from his past but does show intact semantic recall.
He also shows a lack of initiation and other frontal lobe deficits.
(note: these were the basic acceptable answers, if you went into more detail that was fine).

4. How would you test HM and KC to see what they can and cannot do?
Any answer was fine as long as it was a way to test their memory functions.  It was best
if you gave a justification for your particular type of testing.
