Thursday, June 2
McCarley et al. (2004).  What do the results say about how to improve safety screening at the airport?
Tuesday, June 7
Strayer & Johnston (2001). On July 8, it will become illegal to use a handheld cell phone while driving in Chicago. Based on the results of the article, as well as your own opinion, is this an appropriate ban? Why or why not?

Roberts & Kreuz (1994). Tuesday, July 5
Ryan et al. (2002).  Ryan et al. (2002) indirectly suggest several ways that older adults can maintain adequate performance, such as taking advantage of the synchrony effect, or using a stimulant (such as caffeine) to help them during times when their arousal may be decreased, such as late afternoon.  Based on what you know about how to improve memory, what other suggestions could you make for older adults?  Consider the roles of elaborative rehearsal, schemata, and strategies.
Thursday, July 7
Klein (1999).  There is a special reading worksheet for this reading.
Tuesday, July 12 German & Barrett (2005). German and Barrett suggest that susceptibility to functional fixedness may be equally present across cultural groups.  However, what types of knowledge or experiences might lead to individual variation in susceptibility to functional fixedness?  You can use the problems in the article as examples.

Thursday, July 14 Hecht & Proffitt (1995). Hecht and Proffitt present a task where novices outperform experts.  Given the same group of subjects, what task(s) could you use that would lead to the experts outperforming the novices?  Explain.
