News Letter (2008_#1)

Faculty News

1. Dr. Ackerman received a 2-year grant (in collaboration with a PI from Univ. of Colorado Denver) from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
2. Dr. Benevolenskaya received a 4-year grant from the American Cancer Society. This is the 3rd time our department has received this award. Previous recipients are Dr. Frolov and Dr. Merrill.
3. Dr. Caffrey is the Director of the Basic Science Core of the recently submitted Chicago Developmental Center For AIDS Research grant (D-CFAR), which is designed to enhance HIV/AIDS-related research among investigators at UIC, Rush Medical Center and Cook County.
4. Dr. Colley, as the COM Associate Dean for Graduate Research and Education, headed the Graduate Programs Self-Assessment for COM 8-year review mandated by IBHE and the university.
5. Dr. Merrill is awarded a 5-year grant from the National Cancer Institute.
6. Dr. Subramanian retired after more than 30 years of service. He has been granted Emeritus status by the university.

General News

1. Dr. Mary Truscott (Frolov Lab) received a 2 year Postdoctoral Fellowship from Fonds Recherche en Sante Quebec (FRSQ).
2. We welcome the following New Employees:

Student News

1. Aaron Ambrus (Frolov Lab) received a 2 year Predoctoral Fellowship from the American Heart Association.
2. Laxmi Subramanian is in the 2nd year of her Predoctoral Fellowship from the American Heart Association.
3. Jackson Hoffman (Merrill Lab) is in the 2nd year of his Predoctoral Fellowship from the American Heart Association
4. Hyun Jung Park (Costa/Raychaudhuri Lab) who received the highly competitive Dean’s Scholar Award for 2008/2009.
5. Congratulations to Richa Bedi (Ackerman Lab) and her husband who welcomed their 2nd son on April 11, 2008.
6. Congratulations to Katharine Weaver (Tyner Lab) who got married on June 14, 2008.
7. Congratulations to Prashanth Bhaskar (Hay Lab) who has successfully completed his Thesis Defense on June 23, 2008.
