The Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic

When surgery alone cannot meet the functional and cosmetic needs of a patient, a prosthetic or artificial replacement may be employed. The Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic was established in the 1960s to provide a comprehensive program of prosthetic services within The Craniofacial Center. Initially, medical artists were trained to make prosthetic eyes, ears, or noses for patients; the first such program of its kind in the world. A restorative dental component was added in 1970. By then, The Center’s reputation and referral base had expanded and it was treating patients with head and neck cancer and craniofacial trauma in addition to caring for those with congenital cleft and craniofacial conditions.

Today, the Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic is the premier prosthetics center in the Midwest one of the most renowned in the country. The clinic team includes a board-certified maxillofacial prosthodontist, anaplastologists/medical artists, a certified dental technician, and a board certified ocularist. All are integral members of The Craniofacial Center and work closely with other team members at The Center to provide complete care for each patient. Prosthetic services include:

  • Obturator
  • Palatal lift
  • Palatal augmentation
  • Speech aid prosthesis
  • Tooth replacement
  • Dental implants
  • Jaw replacement prosthesis
  • Craniofacial osseointegerated implant prosthesis
  • Implant-retained oral or facial prosthesis
  • Ocular prosthesis
  • Ear (auricular) prosthesis
  • Nasal prosthesis
  • Orbital prosthesis
  • Limb (finger, hand) prosthesis

This rehabilitation may be provided in conjunction with reconstructive surgical procedures. All prosthetic services are coordinated with the comprehensive care plan at The Craniofacial Center. The Clinic’s program using oral and craniofacial osseointegrated implants for prosthetic rehabilitation is one of the largest in the nation. In fact, the Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic was one of the original research sites to test the use of craniofacial implants in the United States.
