Clinical Care

Heart Center: Center for Advanced Cardiac Imaging

At the University of Illinois at Chicago over 150,000 coronary calcium screening clinical studies have been performed. The University of Illinois at Chicago began coronary artery calcium screening in 1989.  In 1993 the coronary calcium screening program was offered tophysicians for their patients and directly to individuals with risk factors. Presently there are over 500 articles in peer reviewed journals attesting to the usefulness of coronary calcium screening.

The coronary calcium imaging lab has been instrumental in contributing to the coronary calcium screening literature. Currently we are involved in five NIH funded trials examining the role of early subclinical disease in various cohorts.

NIH funded trials
Long-Term Consequences of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Prospective Study of Chronic Renal Insufficiency
Risk Factors, Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Events in Diabetes Type 2 Study (RACED)
Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)
Longitudinal Studies of Coronary Heart Disease Risk Factors in Young Adults (CARDIA)

64 Slice Cardiac Computed Tomography Angiography (CCTA)
The CCTA program was begun at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2008. The mission of the CCTA program is to provide outstanding quality CCTA procedures in referred patients. Additionally the CCTA program will be involved in the clinical evaluation of CCTA technology.
