UIC Section of Cardiology

Research

The Centers of Excellence within the Section of Cardiology are founded on the interactions of its faculty with the goal of defining the steps between fundamental discovery and its application in clinical medicine.

With this approach we hope to synergize multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary clinical and translational research to catalyze the application of new knowledge and techniques to clinical practice at the front lines of patient care.

Center for Regenerative Medicine
Our mission is to explore the developmental and functional properties of cardiac muscle through the use of embryonic and adult stem cells. We will extend our basic science results to preclinical studies in animal models of cardiovascular disease with defined therapeutic outcomes.

Center for Advanced Cardiac Imaging
The coronary calcium screening program is offered to physicians for their patients and directly to individuals with risk factors. Presently there are over 500 articles in peer reviewed journals attesting to the usefulness of coronary calcium screening. And the coronary calcium imaging lab has been instrumental in contributing to the coronary calcium screening literature.

Center for Cardiovascular Research
The Section of Cardiology is involved in a variety of clinical and basic research activities. Many of these are under the auspices of the Center for Cardiovascular Research (jointly directed by R. John Solaro and Samuel Dudley), which has linked the clinical activities of the section with the vibrant basic research environment within UIC’s larger medical school campus.
