Gastroenterology Formal Education

Fellows are required to attend the weekly GI Research Conference, coordinated by Dr. Robert Carroll. "Frontiers" is an ongoing weekly Research Conference that brings internationally recognized investigators to UIC to meet with physicians and research staff. A brief listing of past speakers can be viewed by visiting our prior speakers page.

A weekly Clinicopathological Correlation Conference is coordinated by Dr. Russell Brown. This conference is attended by the entire GI faculty and staff, and by members of the Departments of Surgery, Pathology and Radiology.

Development of expertise in the reading of Liver and other GI histopathology is ensured by attendance at a weekly Biopsy Conference run by Dr. T. Layden, Chief of the UIC Department of Medicine.

Finally, all fellows are required to take and pass PhyB 512, Advanced Gastrointestinal Physiology. This course is taught by Dr. M. Rao of the UIC Department of Physiology and Biophysics, and ensures that all fellows are solidly grounded in the basic science relevant to the study of gastrointestinal diseases.
