RESEARCH INTERESTS

My major research interest focuses on the characterization and regulation of serotonin reuptake transporter (SERT) in the human intestine both at the transcriptional and translational level. Serotonin (5-HT) plays a critical role in the gut as a neurotransmitter, hormone and a mucosal signaling molecule. After exerting its effects via specific 5-HT receptors, 5-HT is inactivated by its reuptake through SERT. A decrease in SERT activity and expression has been demonstrated in patients with ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome. We are currently investigating the regulation of SERT by its substrate serotonin and also by various inflammatory mediators.

My other research interests include understanding the molecular and cellular mechanism(s) of regulation of human intestinal NaCl absorption. These studies are aimed at investigating the effects of serotonin and enteric bacterial pathogens on human intestinal electrolyte absorptive mechanisms and delineating the signal transduction pathways and membrane trafficking events underlying these effects.
