Basic Research Interests

My research focuses on the interaction of enteric bacterial pathogens with host intestinal epithelial cells and the mechanisms by which epithelial function is altered as a result of these infections. Specific physiological functions that are being investigated include tight junction barrier function, active ion transport, and the epithelial immune response. Our studies have primarily concentrated on enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) although we are beginning to compare the effects observed with this pathogen to other enteric bacterial pathogens including all pathogenic E. coli, Salmonella, and Shigella.
