The clinical program offers supervised training in a variety of settings which includes an inpatient Geriatric Assessment Rehabilitation Unit (G.A.R.U.) within the University of Illinois Hospital, a 330-bed teaching hospital. Here a team of geriatricians, nurses, social workers, dieticians, dentists, and physical, occupational, and speech therapists provide assessment of acutely ill hospitalized elderly patients and team care for those patients in need of a longer hospital stay to regain their former functional performance. These same team members offer inpatient consultations to other hospitalized patients. In the outpatient unit of the University of Illinois Medical Center, there is a team geriatric assessment/outpatient clinic for those patients needing longitudinal care or outpatient comprehensive diagnostic assessment. These programs are complemented by a similar inpatient unit, the Geriatric Evaluation and Management (G.E.M.) Unit, a consultation service, and an outpatient clinic at the West Side Veterans Administration Medical Center , a 514-bed Dean's Committee Hospital located on campus. The team at this hospital is augmented by a geriatric social worker, nurse practitioner, and geropsychiatrist.

Experience in nursing homes takes place at three teaching nursing homes located in the Chicagoland area. Here experience in the role of medical director and in the care of skilled and intermediate care nursing home residents is available. The fellowship also has a working relationship with the Berwin-Cicero Council on Aging. This facility is the home of the local area Agency on Aging which provides the programs of community-based services an also houses an adult day care center and a burgeoning senior center.

There is a rotation with an excellent home health care agency. This rotation not only gives an opportunity to make home visits, but also to understand the role of medical director of a home health agency. The section is also developing relationships with community-based social service organizations which will provide opportunities for fellows to serve as excellent advisors. Exposure to hospice and palliative care is provided through rotations with Chicago-Area hospices.

At these sites there are clinical conferences, interdisciplinary conferences and symposia. There are also seminars in psychogeratrics. The Medical Center has a regional medical library and extensive computer resources.

During the fellowship, there are opportunities to become involved with the research projects of the section. These include both basic and clinical research.
