The Section of General Internal
Medicine provides both primary care internal medicine services and consultation
for pre-operative evaluation and inpatient care. It focuses on providing
a comprehensive approach to patients in their need for medical care across
the continuum of ambulatory and inpatient services. As the major site of
primary care adult services, our ambulatory centers provide a focal point
for the care of the growing number of patients in managed care plans affiliated
with the UIC Medical Center.
With
over thirty faculty members at the UIC and the Jesse
Brown VA Medical Centers,
our section has a staff with varied backgrounds and diverse clinical and
academic interests. Our clinical emphasis includes comprehensive general
internal medicine with an emphasis on prevention and risk factor modification
including diet modification, exercise, stress reduction and life style alterations.
Our research interests deal with the latest innovations in a variety of health
services research. These include improving patient-physician communications,
bioethical aspects of practice in the managed care environment, innovations
in educating medical residents and students regarding managed care and primary
care, enhancement of self-care in diabetic patients, and secondary data analyses
of large clinical databases with regard to quality assessment, access and
patient satisfaction.
Our perspective on primary internal
medicine seeks a balance between the technical, scientific aspects of healthcare
delivery and the humanistic aspects of caring for patients in their totality
and cultural context. We believe this is an exciting time to practice internal
medicine with all the craft and knowledge that is both available now and
soon obtainable through further investigation. Our faculty conveys this positive
sense of a creative approach to our fellows, residents, students and the
other staff caring for our patients.
