Gordon Schiff, M.D.
Gordon Schiff currently Professor of Medicine at Rush University, and
a senior attending Physician at Cook County (Stroger) Hospital where he has worked for
more than 30 years since starting as a volunteer in the Emergency Room in 1970 as a
premedical student, and later as a resident and attending physician. Until this past July
he was Director of Clinical Quality Research and Improvement, for the Department of
Medicine,
Dr Schiff has published numerous patient safety and medication prescribing improving articles in Annals of Int Med, JAMA, Arch Intern Med, Medical Care, Am J Health System Pharm. Most recently he was editor of special issue (2/2005) of Jt Commission Jl on Quality and Safety devoted to safety and reliability of handling of critical lab and radiology results. This has recently been expanded into a book published by Joint Commission Resources, Getting Results: Reliably Communicating and Acting on Critical Test Results in 2006 (Dr. Schiff is editor and author of 5 chapters). He is author of the section on Diagnostic Error in the forthcoming WHO monograph Current Issues in Patient Safety: A Global Perspective being Prepared by: The Committee on Research Priorities World Alliance for Patient Safety / World Health Organization.
He is longtime member of the editorial Board of Medical Care,
and Journal of Public Health Policy, and recently chaired the search committee that
selected the new Medical Care journal editors. He is currently Chair of the Medical
Care of the American Public Health Association (APHA), and recipient of the 2005 Institute
of Medicine Chicago (IOMC) patient safety leader of the year award, and the Institute for
Safe Medical Practices (ISMP) 2006 Lifetime Achievement award.
