Faculty

Faculty members fulfill the teaching, research, and public service mission requirements of the University and pursue career paths within their professional disciplines. Faculty titles are:

Professor
Associate Professor
Assistant Professor
Appointments for faculty must be tenure or tenure-track. Adjunct, clinical, research, teaching, or visiting professors do not receive tenured appointments.

Academic Professional

Academic Professionals (APs) are generally salaried (exempt) employees whose positions meet specialized administrative, professional, or technical needs. They perform high-level duties, and frequently they have specialized responsibilities in academic, research, or administrative areas.

All APs must have at least a bachelor's degree in a field required by the position. Positions frequently require an advanced degree and experience uniquely relevant to the job.

APs receive a contract for a specified appointment period, often with renewal possibilities for subsequent periods. They have the same privileges as faculty and non-tenured academics, except those privileges that apply specifically to the faculty, such as tenure eligibility.

Academic Hourly

Academic Hourly (AH) positions offer opportunities to work in non-Civil Service jobs on a temporary basis. These positions require at least a bachelor's degree, along with professional qualifications and expertise. The duties are non-clerical, and the State Universities Civil Service System does not govern the positions.

Academic Hourly employees fill a wide range of needs in University units, such as special web development projects, short-term research activities, and unique, project-oriented instructional or administrative tasks.

Other Academics

Other Academics help fulfill the teaching, research, and public service mission requirements of the University and pursue career paths within their professional disciplines. These positions are non-tenured/non-tenure-track. Academic titles include:

Clinical Associate
Instructor
Lecturer
Research Associate
Teaching Associate
Academic titles sometimes resemble faculty titles. However, such academic positions either are for less than 51% time, or they include modifiers such as adjunct, clinical, research, teaching, or visiting.

Civil Service

The State Universities Civil Service System governs Civil Service (CS) employees. These employees support many activities at the University of Illinois. They hold jobs in clerical, crafts and trades, managerial, para-professional, professional, service, and technical areas. CS titles include, but are not limited to:

Accountant
Building Custodian
Business Manager
Carpenter
Computer Programmer
Driver
Electrician
Food Service Worker
Hospital Service Worker
Police Officer
Registered Nurse
Veterinary Technician
Individuals interested in CS employment must:

Be residents of the State of Illinois.
Have a current electronic application on file at the U of I.
Qualify for and pass CS examinations.

Extra Help

Extra Help positions offer opportunities to work on a temporary basis. These positions may last from one day to no more than 900 hours in any consecutive 12-month period. Scheduled work hours are often flexible.

Minimum wage: as determined by the IL Department of Labor for an H1B visitor: This is the lowest salary that the Department can pay the visitor. It is determined by the information provided on the Prevailing Wage statement of the H1B application. The section is REQUIRED to pay the BCIS fee if the section pays the prospective employee this salary.

Prevailing Wage: A higher salary that the section has the option of paying the prospective employee.
