Burton Andersen was born in Chicago and received his B.S., M.S., and M.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago. After receiving training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University of Illinois, he spent two additional years in training in Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. He was on the faculty of the University of Rochester and Northwestern University before returning to his alma mater, the University of Illinois at Chicago as Chief of the Section of Infectious Diseases. His bibliography includes over one hundred research and clinical articles, and book chapters. His research has dealt primarily with basic studies on neutrophil function, and currently he is working with an Assyriologist on the history of medicine in ancient Mesopotamia. He currently is the Research Subject Advocate for the General Clinical Research Center of the University of Illinois Hospital.
