Welcome to the University of Illinois at Chicago Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Established in 1979, UIC’s emergency medicine residency has a rich tradition of educating emergency physicians spanning over three decades, making us one of the oldest programs in the country. We are fortunate to have been chosen for an exclusive ACGME pilot program giving us an unprecedented eight year accreditation, through 2014. Our Emergency Medicine program is 3 years in length and our Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine program is 5 years. We take 13 Emergency Medicine residents per year and 2 Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine residents per year.

We pride ourselves on providing a breadth of knowledge that is unique to our three hospital system. The University of Illinois Hospital, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and Mercy Hospital and Medical Center each provide a distinctive patient population which when combined produce a wonderful diversity that maximizes each resident’s the clinical potential. In addition, our three hospital system provides an unusually large faculty group, with nearly 50 members, providing a vast spectrum of educational opportunities. Mentors abound. Our mission is to educate emergency physicians to provide excellent clinical care in a compassionate manner while maintaining our own diversity. In addition, as a university based program, we provide excellent academic opportunities, including three fellowship programs in toxicology, international medicine and ultrasound. The pride of our program is not only the excellent residents that we graduate, but the camaraderie that is developed within each class and throughout the program. These bonds often lead to lasting friendships both among residents, and between residents and faculty.
