This patient ingested a "Lava Lamp." Early models of this product used a combination of low molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) and microcrystalline wax. The low molecular weight PEG differs from the peg solutions used for bowel preps in that it can be absorbed from the gut, creating an osmolar gap. The new "Lava Lamp" products do not contain this product.
