Donald R. May, MD, FACS
Former Resident and Fellow of:
University of Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary in Chicago

Donald R. May was born in Northern Illinois. He was raised on his ancestral farm, which he and his wife Jane still operate.

He received a B.S. with High honors and Distinction in Microbiology in 1968 from the University of Illinois, Champaign and his M.D. from the Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago, in 1972. During his senior year of the medical school he was a research fellow in the laboratory of Gholam Peyman, M.D.

He was in intern at the Northwestern University Memorial Hospitals in Chicago. He completed his residency in ophthalmology in 1976 and a fellowship in retina surgery in 1977, both at the University of Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary in Chicago.

He was Major in the United States Air Force and was on active duty at the Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, San Antonio, 1977-79. There he founded the Retina/Vitreous/Ocular Trauma Service, for which he received the Air Force Commendation Medal.

Dr. May has been on the faculties of the University of Illinois, the University of Texas, The University of California, Tulane University, and Texas Tech health Sciences University. He was Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and later an Associate Dean at the Texas Tech School of Medicine. He was a professor in the Department of Health Organization Management and taught MBA students. In addition, he has taught surgery in Japan, India, and Western Europe.

He has authored more than 100 scientific publications and has given more than 200 scientific presentations at national and international meetings. Dr. Donald May is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of numerous professional societies.
