Research Interests
Dr. Azar is interested in the mechanisms that prevent corneal neovascularization, a condition in which undesired blood vessels develop in the cornea, usually in response to a lack of oxygen. This vascularization process must be stopped, or at least diminished, if vision is to be preserved. He is a leading corneal surgeon who has developed mathematical modeling and novel techniques in refractive and other corneal and anterior segment surgeries.

Education

• MD American University of Beirut, Lebanon

• 1986 Residency in Ophthalmology and a Clinical Fellowship in Corneal and External Diseases at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard Medical School

• Research Fellowship with Ilene Gipson at the Schepens Eye Research Institute (an affiliate of Harvard)

• Served as Chief Resident and Instructor in Ophthalmology, at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, from 1990 to 1991
