Vitreoretinal Service
Professional and Research Interests
My practice includes all retinal diseases. It is always a pleasure to treat straightforward disease with a good prognosis. However, much of my focus is on difficult retina diseases and conditions which are not responsive to standard treatments. In particular my long standing academic and clinical efforts have been towards better treatments and reduction of blindness from pediatric retinal diseases. I direct the Pediatric Retina Clinic and reguarly treats ROP, PHPV, FEVR, Coats’ disease, Stckler’s Disease, Chorioretinal and optic nerve colobomas, Incontinetia Pigmenti, Juvenile retinoschisis. I also lead the Retinoblastoma Mangement Group. Other interests include eye trauma, complex retinal detachment, and surgical Dr Shapiro is a member of the Association of Pediatric Retina Specialists, He has edited two books on ROP and has been the Principle investigator for the Chicago center for NIH studies of ROP, both STOP-ROP and ETROP. He has also served on their executive committees. He was the only Chicagoan on the International Committee on Classification for ROP.
