America's Best Hospitals 2003

”If you're looking for the best in medical care, check out the 14th annual edition of "America's Best Hospitals." U.S.News & World Report magazine ranks 203 top medical centers in 17 specialties in their recently published annual survey. The rankings include 203 different medical centers, winnowed from 6,003 hospitals across the country, in 17 specialties from cancer to urology.

“In each of the 17 specialties, 150 board-certified physicians were selected at random from the American Medical Association's Masterfile of more than 800,000 doctors and mailed a survey form. They were asked to list up to five hospitals they believe to be tops in their specialty, without considering cost or location. Reputational scores show the percentages of responding doctors in the three years who named the hospitals. Nearly 52 percent of the 8,160 physicians surveyed responded.”

The magazine bases its medical school rankings on a combination of two reputational surveys (one of deans/senior faculty and another of directors of intern-residency programs) and objective data (research awarded to the medical school and all its affiliated hospitals, student selectivity, and faculty resources).

The rankings are based on a formula that weighs several criteria, including how selective a program is in admitting applicants, faculty resources, institutional reputation and research activity. This year UIC’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences ranks 19th among the nation’s top 50 ophthalmology departments. The department is widely recognized for its renowned faculty, pioneering research and patient care, and its ability to consistently attract the best and brightest students to its residency program.
