Posted 4/01/08 Herpesviruses infect a vast majority of humans and demonstrate the ability to spread to internal organs with many serious life-threatening implications. Using real-time imaging we have shown that herpes viruses can traffic between the cells. This previously unknown trafficking occurs from outside the cells and it may signify a key mechanism by which the viruses acquire the ability to spread to internal organs without getting detected by immune system. The discovery of the exogenous viral transport marks a new concept in herpesvirus pathogenesis with strong implications for viral spread and transmission to new human hosts. |
