The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is proud to announce the following recognition of our outstanding clinicians and researchers.

A paper presented by Dr. Clement Chow, vitreoretinal fellow, at the AAO Pediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus Session was selected as a “Best Paper”:  Peripheral Nonperfusion and Tractional Retinal Detachment Associated with Congenital Optic Nerve Anomalies, Shapiro M, Blair MP, Kiernan D, Chow C.

Dr. Jenny Lim, professor of ophthalmology received the 2011 Secretariat Award from the AAO

Dr. Irene Maumenee, research professor of ophthalmology, was honored by Fight for Sight on the occasion of their 65th anniversary during the 2011 ARVO meeting.

Dr. William Mieler, professor of ophthalmology, received a 2011 Life Achievement Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Mieler also received the Founders Award and presented the Founders Award Lecture at the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) annual meeting. 

Dr. Joel Sugar, professor of ophthalmology, received the 2011 Castroviejo Award, the highest award of the Cornea Society, given in recognition of exceptional contributions in support of the Society’s mission to promote knowledge, research and understanding in cornea, external disease and refractive surgery.  The award is named for Ramon Castroviejo, MD, the father of modern corneal transplant surgery and the inspiration for the founding of the Cornea Society. 

Dr. Thasarat Vajaranant, assistant professor of ophthalmology, received an Achievement Award from the AAO.
