Department NewsWilliam F. Mieler, MD, is new Vice Chair and Director of Ocular Oncology at Infirmary
The University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary (IEEI) welcomes William F. Mieler, MD, as our new Professor of Ophthalmology, Vice Chair and Director of the Ocular Oncology Service. Dr. Mieler has a long and distinguished career as an expert in treating diseases of the macula, retina and vitreous, in addition to medical and surgical management of eye injuries. Most recently the chairman of the University of Chicago’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Dr. Mieler has also worked at the Cullen Eye Institute at the Baylor College of Medicine as a professor of ophthalmology. A prolific author—writing or co-authoring more than 250 peer-reviewed publications, and 50 book chapters—he currently serves on several editorial boards, including the American Journal of Ophthalmology, the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Dr. Mieler has also edited two textbooks, Macular Surgery and Drug mechanisms and Pharmacotherapy, andserved as asection editor for Ophthalmic Surgery: Principles & Practice (Blackwell), Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology, and the American Medical Association’s Clinical Atlas. He has been recognized as one of the “Best Doctors in America,” “America’s Top Ophthalmologists” by the Consumers’ Research Council of America, and Chicago’s and America’s Top Doctors by Castle Connelly Medical, Ltd. In addition, he has been honored by the American Academy of Ophthalmology with its Lifelong Education for the Ophthalmologist Continuing Education Recognition Award (2000) and the Senior Honor Award (2001), and by the Vitreous Society with its Honor Award (1997) and Senior Honor Award (2001).
