Powerful new OCT3 machine improves diagnosis of glaucoma, other retinal diseases

UIC Eye Center clinicians and researchers can now, using an Optical Coherence Tomographer Model 3000, visualize retinal abnormalities in patients suspected of having glaucoma and other retinal diseases. OCT3 is considered the state-of-the-art technology for cross-sectional imaging of the retinal tissue in living human eyes.
The diagnosis and monitoring of many eye diseases is based on direct visualization of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue in the back of the eye. OCT provides real-time images of retinal tissue with micron scale resolution. Its resolution and diagnostic flexibility make the OCT3 a unique diagnostic and management tool for glaucoma and retinal disease, while providing a high degree of patient comfort and ease of use.

  • OCT3 dramatically improves the physician's ability to detect retinal diseases during routine eye examinations.

  • Optical coherence tomography works much like ultrasound, except that it uses light rather than sound and thereby achieves ten times better resolution.

  • OCT3 makes it possible for everyone to undergo a rigorous retinal screening - typically in less than 10 minutes - without discomfort.

The acquisition of the OCT 3 was made possible by a generous gift from Mr. Gerhard Cless executive vice president and secretary of Zebra Technologies Corporation, the world's leading provider of bar coding technologies, headquartered in Vernon Hills, Illinois.
