Glaucoma Fellowship

The Department offers a one-year fellowship in Glaucoma. The emphasis is on clinical care but both clinical and basic research opportunities are available.

Requirements and Responsibilities

Must have completed a residence in ophthalmology and must be able to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine in Illinois . The fellow will see patients in the clinic together with the faculty and operate with them. The fellow will have his/her own clinics 3 half days a week and will attend the residents in the General Eye Clinic one half day a week. The fellow will see patients both at the Eye and Ear Infirmary and at the Westside VA Hospital. The fellow is expected to actively participate in the weekly Glaucoma Service Conference/Journal Club and Departmental Grand Rounds.

Facilities/Surgical Opportunities

The Glaucoma Service at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary has seven examining lanes. It has two Goldmann, two Humphrey and one FDT perimeter. It has argon, diode, and Nd:YAG lasers. The Department has an OCT III fundus analyzer. The Glaucoma Consultation Service has clinics 7 half days a week, the Fellow Service has clinics 2 half days a week and Resident Glaucoma Clinic meets 2 days a week. Surgery is performed at the University of Illinois Hospital. The fellow scrubs with all three faculty, both as an assistant and as primary surgeon. They also assist and perform their own laser procedures. The Service averages 6-10 major surgical procedures per week and 3-5 laser procedures. In addition, the fellow will perform 1-2 cases per week at the VA as primary surgeon.
