Medical Student EducationProgram Overview
The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences offers two clerkships: The four week career elective clerkship in Ophthalmology , offered once a year in July The one-week required Ophthalmology clerkship, offered on an every other week schedule from August to April The department also offers a half-day workshop during the fall for all M2 students as part of the Essentials of Clinical Medicine course. The educational goal of the Department of Ophthalmology is to provide medical students with core instruction in the principles of the ophthalmologic examination. This includes the initial evaluation of eye emergencies, ocular trauma and other vision-threatening diseases seen by the primary care physician. The basic eye examination is taught in small groups, emphasizing hands-on experience from skilled faculty examiners. Core reading materials are supplied to each student and a vast array of audiovisual materials are available to supplement the lecture series. Students are encouraged to attend all lectures and conferences, and may observe surgery in the operating room. In clinic, the students work up selected patients, under the supervision and guidance of both the resident and attending staff. These interactions enhance the learning and teaching process for both residents and students. At the completion of the rotation, a practical quiz is given covering the ophthalmologic examination. There is immediate grading and feedback, to maximize learning and allow students to address any questions. Student Instructions & Expectations All students are expected to be present at each clinic or didactic session unless they have an excused absence (per the policy of the Office of Student Affairs) and approval from Dr. Djalilian, Clerkship Director. While on rotation, all students are to report to the Ophthalmology Education Office, Room 1.59 EEI, daily at 9:00 (with the exception of the first Monday of the rotation, when students should report at 8:00 am). A sign-in sheet will be on the table in 1.59 EEI each morning. Rotations hours are 8:00 am-4:00 pm on Monday and 9:00 am-4:00 pm Tuesday-Friday. Students will be divided into groups for each half-day session and will either be assigned to the General Eye Clinic or will view video lectures or work on CD ROMs in the Ophthalmology Education Office student room. Videos/CD ROM: Each student is expected to view the following lectures/CD ROMs in the curriculum:
Clinic: Students are expected to practice using the slit lamp and perform direct ophthalmoscopy while in the General Eye Clinic. Students need to report to the resident in the room indicated on their schedule for each clinic session. On Thursday or Friday, please turn in signed Skills Evaluation Sheets to Ronnie O'Herrin. Each student must also complete two course evaluation forms, which should also be turned in to Ronnie at the end of the rotation. While in clinic, all students must wear appropriate clinic attire (white coats) and photo ID badges/I-cards (clinic and department policy). Lectures and demonstrations will be given daily by either Dr. Djalilian or his designee. These times vary with each rotation; therefore all students must be present in the clinic or student room during the hours of the rotation (9:00 am-4:00 pm) unless otherwise indicated. On Friday afternoon, students will give a brief presentation to Dr. Djalilian. The presentation topic should have relevance to the student's chosen specialty. In addition, there will be a practical exam covering direct ophthalmoscopy skills, also on Friday afternoon. If you have an emergency and must miss a session, please inform Ronnie O'Herrin (312) 996-8023, which goes to voicemail, or e-mail her at ronoher@uic.edu |
