Which of these lines is the longest one?

The vertical line seems longer than the horizontal one, partly because the eyes move more easily from side to side than up and down. The additional effort to scan a vertical line as opposed to a horizontal one is interpreted by the brain to reflect a greater distance. People tend to overestimate the height of vertical objects.
