Pterygium

A wedge shaped, raised growth of the conjunctiva.  Most commonly found in individuals who spend a lot of time in the sun or live in tropical climates.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Irritation
  • Redness
  • Tearing
  • Growth over the central cornea can affect vision
  • May alter the shape of the cornea causing astigmatism

Treatments and Prevention

  • If grows over central cornea surgical removal is necessary
  • Protect eyes from sun, dust and wind
  • Artificial tears
  • Steroid drops to reduce inflammation
