The Imaging and Digital Analysis Module provides microscopy systems for optical imaging and digital image processing and analysis for ophthalmic research. The module also offers computer programming support for development of customized software for digital image acquisition and analysis. Mahnaz Shahidi, PhD directs the Imaging and Digital Analysis module. Dr. Shahidi is a biophysicist with 15 years of experience in digital image acquisition and analysis of ocular structures.
The module incorporates a total of 1,000 square feet of dedicated space on the second floor of the LIERI Building . Major equipment includes:

Leica confocal laser scanning TCS SP2 AOBS microscope system with argon and dual HeNe lasers, multiple photomultiplier tubes, image acquisition and processing software, including those for fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) analysis, and a computer workstation.

Zeiss Axiovert100M inverted microscope for fluorescence/bright field/DIC imaging, equipped with a Cooke SensiCam digital CCD camera with cooled scientific CCD sensors 1376 x 1040 pixels, 12 bit monochrome digitization and linked to a computer workstation with MetaMorph and MetaFluor software for image acquisition and analysis, and Autodeblur software for image deconvolution.

Zeiss Axioscope2 upright phase contrast and fluorescence microscope equipped with Axiocam high resolution cooled color digital camera 1300 x1030 pixels, a Pentium IV computer and Zeiss imaging workstation with Axiovision image acquisition and analysis software.

Computer workstations for digital image acquisition from a 35mm slide scanner and a flat bed scanner, equipped with Adobe Photoshop and Slidebook image analysis software, interfaced with color printers.
