The Imaging and Image Analysis Module provides microscopy systems for optical imaging and image processing and analysis software for ophthalmic research. Mahnaz Shahidi, PhD, directs the Imaging and Image Analysis module. Dr. Shahidi is a biophysicist with 20 years of experience in digital image acquisition and analysis of ocular structures.
The module incorporates two rooms of dedicated space on the second floor of the LIERI Building. Major equipment includes:

  • Leica confocal laser scanning TCS SP2 AOBS microscope system with argon and HeNe lasers, multiple photomultiplier tubes, image acquisition and processing software, including fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), fluorescence recovery after photo bleaching (FRAP), fluorescence loss in photo bleaching (FLIP), and a physiology module for ratio imaging.
  • Zeiss Axiovert100M inverted microscope for fluorescence/bright field/DIC imaging, equipped with a cooled monochrome digital CCD camera  and linked to a computer workstation with MetaMorph and MetaFluor software for image acquisition and analysis, and deconvolution.
  • Zeiss Axioscope2 upright phase contrast and fluorescence microscope equipped with high resolution cooled color digital camera and imaging workstation with Axiovision image acquisition and analysis software.
  • Spectralis™ HRA+OCT systemfor retinal imaging (infrared), retinal and choroidal vascular imaging (fluorescein and ICG), retinal cell imaging (GFP labeled), retinal intrinsic fluorophores imaging (autofluorescence), and OCT (spectral domain) in animals.
  • Several imaging workstations equipped with extensive image analysis software, scanning and printing hardware.
