The Instrument Shop Module is responsible for the design and construction of custom-built apparatus for a wide range of research programs and for regularly maintaining various items of equipment. The Instrument Shop provides investigators with high-level mechanical engineering expertise and the rapid turnaround that is essential for ongoing studies in which the availability of organisms may be limited.  Kenneth Alexander, PhD, directs the Instrument Shop Module. Dr. Alexander specializes in the use of noninvasive procedures to investigate visual function in human observers, including persons with various types of inherited and acquired retinal degenerations, as well as animal models of those diseases.  He has over 40 years of experience in vision science research.

The Instrument Shop occupies 810 sq. ft in the basement of the LIERI Building and consists of two rooms. The Instrument Shop is equipped with a number of basic machines for routine machining chores. Oversize pieces of equipment requiring large work beds and specialized machine tools are handled by the UIC’s larger shop facilities. A mechanical engineer, Marek Mori, MS has served the Instrument Shop module since its inception in 1984.
