Applied Physics Laboratory
The Applied Physics Laboratory, directed by Mahnaz Shahidi, PhD, is located in the Lions of Illinois Eye Research Institute, one of two buildings comprising the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Shahidi and her research team apply physics and biomedical engineering principles towards the development of prototype optical imaging systems that allow enhanced visualization and quantitative assessment of the retinal tissue of the eye in health and disease. Advances in optical technologies that expand the capabilities of current approaches are crucial for improving the diagnosis and understanding of pathophysiology of eye diseases.
