Getting Your First Paycheck
Residents are paid monthly.
GME puts residents and fellows on payroll. Before GME can put you on payroll, there are several conditions you must meet.
1. You must have a valid temporary or permanent Illinois medical license.
2. If you are not a US citizen, you must have a valid visa or be a temporary or permanent resident.
3. You must have or have applied for a US Social Security number.
4. You must have returned both copies of your signed Resident Agreement.
5. You must have received clearance from University Health Service by completing a pre-employment screening.
6. You must have completed the I-9 form and shown the proper ORIGINAL documents and ID to GME or the UIC Office of International Services to prove that you are eligible to work legally in the US.
7. You must have returned completed Human Resources and Payroll forms:
a. Acknowledgment of Mandated Reporter Status
b. Statement of a Drug-free Workplace
c. W-4 and IL W-4 withholding forms (for visa holders only)
d. Foreign National Tax Information Form (for visa holders only)
8. You must have completed on-line forms in NESSIE:
a. Employee Information Form
b. Education Loan Default
c. Withholding (for US citizens and temporary and permanent residents only)
9. You must have given GME a copy of your medical or dental school diploma, ECFMG certificate, if applicable, and proof that you have passed USMLE Step 2 or its equivalent.
All of these conditions must be met before GME can put you on payroll.
