8.1 Definition
The Chief Resident is a senior resident appointed by the Program Director to supervise junior residents, develop rotation schedules, and perform other administrative duties as assigned by the Program Director.
No program is required to appoint a Chief Resident for the purpose of fulfilling this policy.
  
8.2 Stipends
A. Chief residents will be paid at or near the stipend level one PG- level higher than they would have otherwise received.  The Office of GME will make all stipend adjustments for Chief Residents.
B. Salary in excess of this rule can only be paid by the department sponsoring the Chief Resident's program, and must be approved in writing by the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education.
  

8.3 Appointment Procedure
A. The Program Director will appoint Chief Resident(s) for the program.
B. Terms may be less than one year, in which case the resident will be paid the Chief's supplement for the period in which he/she is appointed.
C. Programs can appoint up to one Chief Resident at a time for each major affiliated institution in the program.
