XXVIII.  Internal Reviews

28.1 Introduction
A. ACGME General Requirements specify that a sponsoring institution must conduct regular reviews of all residency training programs in relation to their compliance with institutional policies and the requirements of the relevant ACGME review committee.
B. The College of Medicine through its Graduate Medical Education Committee will, as a goal, review all residency programs as closely as possible to midway in time between RRC reviews with the following objectives:
1. Monitor the conduct and effectiveness of the program and the balance of education and patient care.
2. Evaluate the program's effectiveness in utilizing resources provided.  
3. Develop recommendations for improving the program's compliance with General and Special Requirements, and the quality of the residents’ educational experience.  
  
28.2 Organization
A. GMEC members will at regular committee meetings identify programs that should be reviewed.
B. A Review Workgroup will be formed consisting of any or all of the following:
1. Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education
2. Committee members
3. Director of GME Programming or Director, Office of GME
4. Faculty members at large
5. Residents other than those in the program to be reviewed
C. The Workgroup will identify participants (faculty and residents) of the program, and conduct interviews, collect relevant documents and data, and analyze the program according to pre-established guidelines.
D. The Workgroup will prepare a written document that contains their findings and recommendations.
E. Appointed member(s) of the Workgroup will meet with the Program Director of the reviewed program to share findings and recommendations, and clarify points and questions raised by the document.
F. The Workgroup will then present the written report to the GMEC at a regular meeting.  Following approval by the Committee, the document will be forwarded to the Dean, COM, for review and archiving.
G. The GMEC will send a letter to the Program Director informing him/her that the review has been approved and forwarded to the Dean, COM.
