Responsibilities of Program Directors
  
3.1 Definition
The Program Director is the administrative head of the residency/fellowship training program as identified with the accrediting agency, or through the GMEC if the program has no outside accreditation. The Program Director will be the authority most directly responsible for the successful implementation and operation of the training program.
  
3.2 Selection
A. The Department Head(s) most closely associated with the training program will appoint a Program Director for each training program. A Department Head may appoint him/herself as Program Director.
B. The Department Head will notify the Office of Graduate Medical Education and the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education of any appointments/terminations of Program Directors.
C. The Department Head is responsible for notifying all accreditation agencies regarding appointments/terminations of Program Directors, and for ensuring that the Program Director meets all specialty board, and/or RRC and General Requirements.
D. Each Program Director must obtain and maintain the following credentials:
1. Requisite and documented clinical, educational and administrative abilities and experience
2. Licensure to practice medicine in the state where the institution that sponsors the program is located
3. Certification by the specially board in the discipline of the program or suitable equivalent qualifications
4. Appointment in good standing to the medical staff of an institution participating in the program.
E. Program Directors must communicate any changes in credentials that could adversely affect program accreditation to the appropriate Department Head and to the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education.
  
3.3 Responsibilities of Program Directors
A. Define and implement the goals and objectives of the training program.  Program goals will be at a minimum those defined by the specialty board of the program.  Written objectives will be routinely provided to residents, fellows and members of the teaching staff.
B. Recruit residents or fellows for appointment to the program according to University, COM, and department/program policy and procedure.
C. Select full-time and voluntary physicians to serve as faculty members of the training program, in accordance with the system for selection of teaching staff developed by the GMEC.
D. Establish and disseminate to all residents, fellows and teaching staff written standards and procedures for the selection,     supervision, evaluation, advancement and dismissal of  training program participants, in accordance with the policies and procedures developed by the GMEC.
E. Ensure that residents and fellows have access to counseling and psychological support for emotional and mental conditions resulting from training-related stress.
F. Assist the GMEC in integrating the training program with the training programs of all other specialties to enable the University to provide an effective overall graduate medical educational program.
G. Participate and assist in Internal Reviews scheduled by the GMEC for the program.
H. Communicate all program status changes, including but not limited to accreditation changes, affiliations, and numbers of residents, to the GMEC.
I. Perform such other duties as may otherwise be assigned by the Department Head and/or COM.
