Objective |
A. |
The College of Medicine is committed to providing residents/fellows with a complete, high-quality educational program. Where circumstances require that a residency program be reduced in size or closed completely, arrangements will be made to enable residents/fellows currently in the program to complete their educational program in the least disruptive manner. |

Procedure |
A. |
Notification: If the College of Medicine intends to reduce the size of a residency program or close a residency program, the residents/fellows in that program will be informed as early as possible. |
B. |
Reduction: Currently enrolled residents/fellows will be allowed to cycle through the program; reduction is implemented by decreasing the number of residents/fellows recruited in future years. |
C. |
If it should become impossible for currently enrolled residents/fellows to complete the program, positions will first be sought within the GME Affiliated Group, which was formed to allow for movement of Medicare - reimbursed positions between member institutions and other University of Illinois at Chicago educational affiliates. If no position can be located among the Affiliated Group institutions, positions will be sought at other affiliated institutions. |
D. |
If no position is available within the Affiliated Group or at other UIC affiliates, the program director and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, in conjunction with the ACGME, will assist the resident in locating a comparable position elsewhere. |
