Responsibility for Supervision |

A. |
It is the obligation of the resident's program director to ensure that residents are properly supervised by faculty or attending physicians at each site at which the resident is assigned. |

B. |
Program directors must ensure that direct or indirect supervision of trainees is in place based on the clinical need of patients and the educational needs of trainees. |

 |
 |
C. |
Supervising faculty must be appropriately-credentialed and privileged attending physicians or licensed independent practitioners (as approved by each RRC). |

 |
 |
 |
D. |
The supervising clinician should be available to provide review and/or oversight of procedures/encounters and provide appropriate feedback to trainees. |

 |
 |
E. |
Program directors must ensure that residents operate under the concept of progressive authority and responsibility. Junior residents may be supervised by more senior residents to the extent of the senior resident's own responsibility, but not beyond. Each residents abilities must be evaluated by the program director based on specific criteria. |

 |
F. |
The provision of care by residents should be determined by the attending faculty member based on the patient's needs and the overall skill of the trainee. |

G. |
Program directors must ensure that all PGY1 residents have direct supervision immediately available at all times. |

Assignment of Responsibilities to Residents |

A. |
Any patient care provided by a resident must be within the context of the training program, except where care is given in emergency situations. |

 |
 |
B. |
Patient care responsibilities assigned to residents will be commensurate with their level of training, according to ACGME Common Program Requirements, the RRC Requirements for the training program and the judgment of the Program Director. These decisions will be based on patient safety, overall severity and complexity of the patient's clinical condition, educational needs of the trainee, and available infrastructure of the clinical setting. |

Each residency training program will define in writing the expected competencies and degree of responsibility allowed for each level of residency. |

The Program Director is responsible for ensuring that each resident is supervised appropriately, regardless of training site to which the resident is assigned. |
